2023 Get Started Right Writing Challenge: Day 6
Get your writing goals started right in 2023 with the first ever Get Started Right Writing Challenge. The sixth day of this writing challenge involves reading.
Welcome to the sixth day of the seven-day Get Started Right Writing Challenge!
For today, read an article on writing; then, comment about something you learned and/or something you'd like to learn about writing, publishing, or anything else in 2023. The article doesn't have to be from this site, but we have quite a lot (with a few possibilities listed below under the categories of Craft of Writing, Business of Writing, and Author Spotlights).
Craft of Writing
- 10 Rules for Writing Opinion Pieces, by Susan Shapiro.
- 11 Secrets to Writing Effective Character Description, by Rebecca McClanahan.
- 6 Secrets to Creating and Sustaining Suspense, by Steven James.
- How to Write Better Using Humor, by Leigh Anne Jasheway.
- 10 Ways to Hook Your Reader (and Reel Them in for Good), by Ann Garvin.
Business of Writing
- How to Write Successful Queries for Any Genre of Writing, by Robert Lee Brewer.
- 15 Things a Writer Should Never Do, by Zachary Petit.
- Why Do Authors Cross Out Their Name When Signing Books?, by Robert Lee Brewer.
- Double Your Freelance Writing Income With Copywriting, by Robert W. Bly.
- 17 Pros and Cons of Traditional Publishing vs. Self-Publishing, by Rick Lauber.
Author Spotlights

- Charlaine Harris: On Shifting Perspectives in a Fantasy Series.
- Lola Jaye: On Telling Untold Stories in Historical Fiction.
- Roselle Lim: On Resting in the Writing Process.
- Mia P. Manansala: On Savoring Positive Feedback.
Read one (or more) of the above (or a completely different article), and share what you learned and/or would like to learn in 2023 in the comments.
Note on commenting: If you wish to comment on the site, go to Disqus to create a free new account, verify your account on this site below (one-time thing), and then comment away. It's free, easy, and the comments (for the most part) don't require manual approval like on the old site. That said, I will be checking a couple times per day to approve the few that do get caught in the spam filters for whatever reason.

Here's my comment:
I'm fortunate enough that I get to read everything published on the website and in the print magazine for Writer's Digest. From that alone, I learn so much every single week, whether it's a new writing technique, an inspirational story, or a new question to ask. Plus, I read quite a bit from other sources throughout the year, and I get to call it research.
That said, I'd like to learn more about various sub-genres this year, and I'm always trying to keep on top of what's happening in publishing in 2023 (and, of course, sharing with everyone here and in my Publishing Insights column in the print magazine).
