What prompted you to write this book?
The idea was ripening in my mind for 20 years, and the time for blossoming had simply arrived.
How long did it take to go from idea to publication? And did the idea change during the process?
A year and a half. Though the ending changed slightly along with some of the characters, the idea remained unaltered.
Were there any surprises or learning moments in the publishing process for this title?
Pleasantly, I learned that my editors could guide me to making my novel more plausible, my characters more clearly drawn, and the ending more of a cliff-hanger.
Were there any surprises in the writing process for this book?
I was surprised by the ease—indeed the joy—of getting out of my comfort zone¸ of creating an imaginary island in a part of the country in which I never lived, in a time well before I was born, and with characters I’ve never met.
What do you hope readers will get out of your book?
A riveting read, a literary experience, and hero that people will both identify with and love.
If you could share one piece of advice with other writers, what would it be?
Fear not the outside of the box; that’s where the greatest creativity lies.
