Plot Twist Story Prompts: Strength Lost

Every good story needs a nice (or not so nice) turn or two to keep it interesting. This week, let a character lose their powers.

Plot twist story prompts aren't meant for the beginning or the end of stories. Rather, they're for forcing big and small turns in the anticipated trajectory of a story. This is to make it more interesting for the readers and writers alike.

Each week, I'll provide a new prompt to help twist your story. Find last week's prompt, Old Technology, here.

Plot Twist Story Prompts: Strength Lost

For today's prompt, let a character lose their powers. A good example of this dynamic is Superman, who is completely unbeatable except for when he loses his super strength (usually because of kryptonite). But this is a super old plot twist that's existed almost as long as storytelling itself.

With this prompt, keep in mind that strength can take many forms. Sure, there's physical strength, but some people find their strength in money or their mental acumen. So some characters may lose their fortune or their senses.

And remember: This twist can be used for protagonists and antagonists alike.

So let your characters lose their powers, and see what happens next.

Have you hit a wall on your work-in-progress? Maybe you know where you want your characters to end up, but don’t know how to get them there. Or, the story feels a little stale but you still believe in it. Adding a plot twist might be just the solution.
