For this week’s market spotlight, we look at BUST, a quarterly feminist lifestyle magazine that publishes nonfiction and fiction by women.
BUST is a quarterly feminist lifestyle magazine. Established in 1993, this brand also offers a podcast on their website.
The editors say, "With an attitude that is fierce, funny, and proud to be female, BUST addresses a refreshing variety of young women's interests, including celebrity interviews, music, fashion, art, crafting, sex, and news. Hip, humorous, and honest, BUST is a cheeky celebration of all things female and a trusted authority on up-and-coming trends among discerning, educated, and culturally aware women."
What They're Looking For
BUST wants stories written by women in the following categories:
- Broadcast: Pop culture, news, and views important to women (250-300 words).
- Real Life: Cooking, crafts, home, and health-related pieces (250-350 words).
- Looks: Fashion, beauty, and style pieces (250-350 words).
- You Go, Girl: Travel pieces (1,000-1,500 words).
- Features: Reported features that are "feminist, sexy, smart, funny, surprising, and generally doesn't suck" (2,500 words or less)
- Sex Files: Sex-related topics (250-350 words).
- One-Handed Read: Erotic fiction (900 words).
The editors say, "Got a great story or a great story idea? Something you're so passionate about that you've just gotta share it with the world? Then don't just sit there, woman! Submit your story to BUST."
How to Submit
Potential writers can submit submit stories or pitches via email to submissions@bust.com. The editors ask that all writers include their full name, email address, mailing address, and day and night phone number. Also, pitches should include published clips.
