New Mexico Magazine: Market Spotlight

For this week’s market spotlight, we look at New Mexico Magazine, a monthly magazine focused on New Mexico and things that can be done there.

Published by the New Mexico Tourism Department, New Mexico Magazine is focused on the power of place, specifically the mountains, desert, grasslands, and forest of New Mexico.

The editors say, "About one-third of our audience lives in the state. The rest live elsewhere in the country. On average, our out-of-state readers visit New Mexico twice a year."

This market pays 35-40 cents per word.

What They're Looking For

The editors of New Mexico Magazine want stories about the New Mexico experience in a first-person narrative when appropriate that inspires readers to follow in the writer's footsteps. So the pieces should mostly be about things people can do in the state.

The editors say, "We're looking for writers—both in New Mexico and elsewhere—who are adept at establishing a theme then sustaining a story with fresh eyes and true insight. We place a premium on good storytelling, tight composition, and factual accuracy. Also, we expect original work."
