Relegation Books: Market Spotlight
For this market spotlight, we look at Relegation Books, a small press that publishes fiction and nonfiction books that opened to fiction submissions in April 2023.
Founded in 2012 by Dallas Hudgens, Relegation Books is a small press that has a track record of publishing both fiction and nonfiction titles. Based in D.C., their website claims to be looking for authors who either haven't found an audience yet or are under-recognized by readers.
The editors say, "Relegation Books works to connect readers and writers on a smaller, more intimate scale, understanding that success isn't always measured by sales numbers."
Authors are paid up to $1,875 per print run.
What They're Looking For
Relegation Books is currently offering an open reading period for story collections and short novels up to 50,000 words. While they don't specify genre, writers can get a sense of what they've previously published by checking out their list of books.
The editors say, "Relegation Books publishes the right books at the right time. We will notify all writers about our decision by September 2023. We will close general submissions after receiving 500 manuscripts, and will accept up to an additional 100 by writers living in Washington, D.C., Maryland, or Virginia."
How to Submit
Potential authors should submit their work via their Submittable page.
