2023 February Flash Fiction Challenge: Day 19

Write a piece of flash fiction each day of February with the February Flash Fiction Challenge, led by Managing Editor Moriah Richard. Each day, receive a prompt, example story, and write your own. Today’s prompt is to write about the ease of friendship.

This month is usually focused on the romantic love in your life, but what about platonic love? The kind of best friend you can call in the middle of the night, who texts you when you've been quiet for too long, who you have the weirdest inside jokes with?

For today’s prompt, write about the ease of friendship.

Remember: These prompts are just starting points; you have the freedom to go wherever your flash of inspiration takes you.

(Note: If you happen to run into any issues posting, please just send me an e-mail at mrichard@aimmedia.com with the subject line: Flash Fiction Challenge Commenting Issue.)

Here’s my attempt at writing about the ease of friendship:

Ease

“Highly suspicious and incredibly cute.”

I fiddled with the edge of the medical tape on the back of my hand. “What is?”

“The name of my memoir, duh.” Jax reached out and covered my hand with theirs. “Stop.”

My eyes burned. I surrendered and slumped against their car window.

“It’s gonna be good news,” Jax continued. “And until then, we’re doing some Millennial self-care.”

“Does that differ from regular self-care?”

“More McDonald’s and Shrek rewatching, probably.”

I couldn’t help but smile. “You’re a good.”

Your goon.”

“Too right.” And for a moment, it does feel like everything will be okay.

As the managing editor of Writer’s Digest magazine, she spearheads the world-building column Building Better Worlds, a 2023 Eddie & Ozzie Award winner. She also runs the Flash Fiction February Challenge on the WD blog, encouraging writers to pen one microstory a day over the course of the month and share their work with other participants. As a reader, Moriah is most interested in horror, fantasy, and romance, although she will read just about anything with a great hook.
