2023 February Flash Fiction Challenge: Day 20

Write a piece of flash fiction each day of February with the February Flash Fiction Challenge, led by Managing Editor Moriah Richard. Each day, receive a prompt, example story, and write your own. Today’s prompt is to write about a very surprising tattoo.

For today’s prompt,  Character A has a very surprising tattoo and Character B discovers it.

Remember: These prompts are just starting points; you have the freedom to go wherever your flash of inspiration takes you.

Here’s my attempt at writing about a surprising tattoo:

Medusas

I was already halfway in love with her when I saw the tattoo for the first time.

It was a hot day, and when she pulled her hair into a messy bun, I caught sight of three dark, patterned snakes descending from her hair and curled down the back of her neck, kissing her nape in a way that was possessive and kind.

I brushed my fingers against them, mesmerized.

She startled, her eyes going wide. I could tell by the tension in her shoulders that she didn’t want me to ask.

I didn’t need to. Survivors recognize each other.

As the managing editor of Writer’s Digest magazine, she spearheads the world-building column Building Better Worlds, a 2023 Eddie & Ozzie Award winner. She also runs the Flash Fiction February Challenge on the WD blog, encouraging writers to pen one microstory a day over the course of the month and share their work with other participants. As a reader, Moriah is most interested in horror, fantasy, and romance, although she will read just about anything with a great hook.
