2024 February Flash Fiction Challenge: Day 7

Write a piece of flash fiction each day of February with the February Flash Fiction Challenge, led by Managing Editor Moriah Richard. Each day, receive a prompt, example story, and write your own. Today’s prompt is to pick one of your favorite books from childhood and write about the character all grown up.

For today's prompt, pick one of your favorite books from childhood and write about the character all grown up

Remember: These prompts are just starting points; you have the freedom to go wherever your flash of inspiration takes you.

(Note: If your story gets flagged for review, be patient—we will be releasing comments every few hours throughout the weekdays of this challenge. Our system randomly flags comments for review, so just sit tight and wait for us to set it free! Here’s my attempt at a story based on one of my favorite childhood books:

Wild Thing

Max is rocking his baby girl, the chair making a horrible creak-crunk as they move forward and back. The room is dark except for the soft glow of the diaper wipe warmer on the changing table. He’s tired from a long day at the office, his body craving the cool rustle of his sheets, his wife’s soft breathing. His newborn’s eyes are wide and dark, alert, even after a full four ounces of milk.

“I used to be a Wild Thing, you know,” he whispers to her. “King of the Wild Things, in fact.”

His daughter farts, loud and wet.
