2021 April PAD Challenge Countdown: T-minus 3

Poem along with the second ever April PAD Challenge Countdown in the 10 days leading up to the 2021 April Poem-A-Day Challenge. For today’s prompt, write a “spirit of the stairs” poem.

For today’s prompt, write a "spirit of the stairs" poem. A few years back, I came across this phrase "spirit of the stairs," and it's basically a way to capture that moment when you come up with all the things you feel you should've said AFTER the moment has passed. Hence, you're on the stairs.

Your poem could be about one of these moments, or it could be about an actual spirit that is haunting the stairs, I suppose.

Remember: These prompts are springboards to creativity. Use them to expand your possibilities, not limit them.

Here’s my attempt at a Spirit of the Stairs Poem:

"your way"

i never said
i never cared
about the things
you cared about
i cared about
you caring what
i talked about
without a doubt
i always cared
'bout what you cared
& now i'm scared
'bout what we talked
about without
raising a voice
& now i'm on
the stairs without
a care for who
is right or who
is wrong i just
want to belong
